Road Trippin’

This weekend I’ll be road trippin’ from NJ to MD for the MSWF. I’m very excited because some of the knit girls will be there. I read on Skittermagoo that there will be a knit bloggers meet-up. It’s currently being organized by Gryphon.

Whenever I go on a trip that involves flying, I always:

  • stay up almost the entire night before packing
  • forget something
  • take some knitting

However, on a road trip there are different considerations. On this trip I will set off with:

  • directions
  • a plan to eat some road food along the way
  • music
  • snacks
  • coffee

I wonder if my knit girls have any funny/unusual pre-trip rituals.

My ritual involves PLANNING on staying up all night long to pack and whatever…but usually I get grouchy and falling asleep at about 4am w/o packing. Then I wake up at 6-7a freaking out b/c i didn’t pack before i fell asleep. I usually forget something i was instructed NOT to forget. and yes..i always take something to knit and at least one magazine to read. I don’t like talking to random strangers on planes. I find that so irritating. :)

I don’t do road trips….so i don’t have a road trip ritual. :) hahahahha. mostly just procrastinating when i DO have to do a road trip.

i hope my snoring doesn’t bother you, BotGurl. :) jk

All my pre-trip rituals flew out the window when I had a baby. But I do start packing two days ahead of time. There just seems to be twice as much stuff that I could forget! I much prefer a road trip pre-pack. They seem much more casual. When I’m flying I always worry about The Squid throwing a tantrum on the plane and bothering the other passengers! So far, I’ve had terrific luck and he has been a fantastic flyer. Of course all of those trips have been under an hour. I’m a bit nervous about this one!

As you can probably guess, my pre-trip rituals include a vast number of obsessive lists . . . when I used to travel frequently for work, I even had a pre-made spreadsheet to print up for packing, and STILL I always forgot something.

I am similar to Chris, but have only just become this way. I have a list… with little check boxes! It totally helps me to NOT forget anything. I update it for each trip and customize it based on what I will need for that trip. I usually pack 2 days ahead if I can. I agree with P-la about road trips too… they are much more casual and you can just throw things in at the last minute. I LOVE roadtrips… especially when someone else is driving! More knit time!

I’m a list maker, too. But I’m not partial to having a preset/printed list to go by; I like writing one out fresh and new. And there are different lists for different aspects.

I used to pack the night before, but Matt has cured me of that habit and now I pack the morning I leave. (Except toiletries - they get pack the day before.)

My only ritual is probably buying a magazine or “light” fiction book at the airport. And I lovelovelove me some road trippin’! I like to drive, turn the radio/iPod up loud, and sing my heart out (to the objections of my car mates)!
